I was in California last week on business. Drove back and forth between LA and Bakersfield. I found an amazing radio station that played all 80s and 90s music. You may be saying to yourself, “Big whoop Lincee. We have a radio station like that here in [insert city].”
Well this one was different. Sure it played your typical George Michael, Bon Jovi and Madonna staple tunes, but only 50 percent of the time. The other half was dedicated to the songs you LOVED back in the day, but the artists didn’t necessarily stand the test of mainstream radio play. You didn’t buy their entire cassette tape…but you did sing at the top of your lungs to the cassette single that cost you only $1.99.
Confused yet?
Let me give you a few examples of these little gems that I re-discovered while driving with my windows down along I-5.
Song/Artist: All Cried Out by Lisa Lisa
Lyrics: “How was I to knooooooow? You would weaken so easily?
Aaahhh-iii-eee-iiii-eee-iiii…I don’t know what to do. Now I’m all cried out. Over you.”
Memory: I really felt I knew what this woman was going through even though I was ten.
Song/Artist: Always by Atlantic Starr
Lyrics: “And weeeeeeee both knooooooooow. That our luuuuuuuuv. Will groooooooow. And FOREVER. It will BE…YOOOOOOOUUUUU and MEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Yeah-eh-eh-eh-uh.”
Memory: Picture it…my uncle shows up with his family on the Fourth of July, picks me up and begins a road trip to Disney World. It was the summer of 1986 and I was in the back seat with my cousins Johnny and Stephanie. That song was on the radio all the time. Since we had to pass through a million states to get from Texas to Florida, radio stations would go in and out. Therefore, we heard Always about every 15 minutes. And we sang loud and proud. To the top of our lungs. Good times.
Song/Artist: Give Me One Reason by Tracy Chapman
Lyrics: “Give me one reason to stay heeyah. And I turn right back around.”
Memory: My sister played this over and over. Love, love, love it.
Song/Artist: What’s Up by 4 Non Blondes
Lyrics: “And I said HEEEEEY YAAAAAY YAAAAAY YAAY YAY, HEEEEEY YAAAAAY YAY. I said HEY. WHAT’S GOING ON?
Memory: Tryout routine for Bobcat Belles. Awesome.
I’ve downloaded them all and they are now a part of the Lincee i-Tunes family. But I would like to add some of their friends to the playlist.
Any ideas for me? Stick to the 80s and 90s and don’t make me laugh by suggesting Milli Vanilli, MC Hammer, Spice Girls, Wham, etc. You know I already have all of those. Shame on you if you don’t.
I’m in meetings all day, but I will be checking tonight for sure. Tomorrow is download day since I am headed to NYC and need some fresh tunes on the old i-Pod.

The Final Countdown – Europe. The follow up single, “Carrie”, was not quite as good but I felt like they were singing just to me.
Hey Lincee – I think if we were to get together and compare playlists, we would like to jazzercise to the same stuff! My husband loves to make fun of me for loving the early 90′s hair bands, but not much makes me happier than a good power ballad. So, I’m suggesting “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” by Poison in the case that you may not already rock out to it, and also “Heaven” by Warrant. Good old early 90′s cheese!! Husband is making fun of me right now, but I might mention that he can sing along to every 80′s song ever made since he is much, much older than me!
“The Promise” by When in Rome…..LOVE IT!!!
I’m sorry but I’m just thinking of the right words to say
I know this may not sound the way I planned it to be………………………..
LOVE IT!
iTunes will pick out songs for you that they (the awesome little gnomes in my computer) think i will like. how did they know? i will check later at the 15 new songs i downloaded after finding this terrific feature.

Forever Young by Alphaville
Heart and Soul by T’Pau
Tennessee and/or Mr Wendel by Arrested Development

If we’re talkin’ Footloose, who could leave out, “The Girl Gets Around” – Sammy Hagar, “Dancing in the Sheets”, or “Holding Out For the Hero”. And the song I’m going to duet-style at my wedding: “Almost Paradise”.

Some tried and true old favorites that I rediscovered when living in Australia – Icehouse – “Crazy” and “Electric Blue” AND, can’t forget INXS – “Do Wot You Do”!
I put together a CD of 80′s music songs for one of my girlfriends that was going on a long road trip a couple years ago. I forced her to identify all the songs WITHOUT cheating, and had to name the movie too. She said it was awesome and kinda hard at times! Here are a couple songs I included –

Billy Idol – “Dancing with Myself” (from Can’t Buy Me Love – the African Anteater Dance!)
John Parr – “St Elmo’s Fire” ( awesome stuff)

Repetition by Information Society.
Kiss me Deadly by Lita Ford
I remember meeting my uncle’s fiancee for the first time – she and her brother were practicing singing Always for a wedding they were in and I thought both she and that song were so super cool! I cannot hear that song without being shoved right back into the 6th grade and idolizing my soon to be aunt!
Jen, you said Sam Goody! I forgot about that place…I would buy posters of the B-52s there and my friends and I would think we were sooooo cool walking around in there looking at cassettes we wanted to buy! Cassette Singles. Wow.

This quest for songs is cracking me up!! What a blast to the past! We DO have a wide gap of ages on here. Love the referral to taping your favorite song w/ a cassette player (#24 Johnnie). Oh come on…! Love of a Lifetime by Firehouse!!

Nobody’s Fool – Cinderella
Seventeen – Winger (also Headed for a Heartbreak)
Born to Be My Baby – Bon Jovi
Good Vibrations – Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch
A newer song that sounds like an 80′s song to me is from the movie, Good Luck Chuck — it’s called Love it When You Call by The Feeling. Such a feel good song. So, thanks Lincee for this post as it’s helped me decide to make a new 80′s/90′s playlist — and thank you for all your time spent making us laugh!
Shout out to Miss Yvonne–You MUST have been a fan of PeeWee’s Playhouse???:) I SO agree with you–there’s a huge age gap here, and its so great!! I am lovin’ that some of you are writing about your favorite songs when you were in kindergarten! The 80′s bring back memories of being a new mom and my 2 year old daughter singing along to “Beat It”! Surprised no one has mentioned Michael Jackson yet!
Some other faves from back in the day:
Overkill- Men at Work
Science- Thomas Dolby
Every Little Thing She Does…..- The Police
Too many more great ones and too old to remember the titles!!
“Basement? Theres’ no basement in The Alamo!!!!”
P.S. From my comment #52 — I do realize Rumors is by Timex Social Club, but on iTunes it comes up under Club Nouveau.
Ok — looks like I’m the old broad of the crowd. So be it — music is timeless and ageless — even the one hit wonders, hmm?

Love of a Lifetime – Firehouse
18 & Life – Skid Row
I Remember You – Skid Row
Without You – Motley Crue
Yo Lincee!
I’ve never been a huge fan of the 80′s music. But there a few songs that I enjoy. I’ve briefly looked through the comments, so if I repeat, I apologize.
What a Feeling – The theme from Flashdance – Irene Cara
My older sister gave me the record (single, the little ones, whatever they are called) when I was 5. I danced to it ALL THE TIME and played it on my…wait for it…Fisher-Price record player. It was heaven.
Stand – R.E.M
The Globe – Big Audio Dynamite
If you like acoustic versions, VH1 has these cd’s (that you can download off itunes) called VH1 Metal Mania Stripped. It is acoustic versions sung by the original people of all those good monster ballads, 90′s songs. It is truly amazing.
And the last one, which you will not find on iTunes or really anywhere else, but I can totally hook you up. The soundtrack to the movie Girls Just Want to Have Fun. I JUST bought it off of ebay, yep, I’m ashamed to say I spent a whole $63 on one cd, but let me tell you, it was so worth it. Dancing in Heaven, Technique, I Can Fly…well worth the investment. You can’t find it anywhere…except ebay.
Happy downloading!!
OK, this could go on forever!! Thought of a couple that I Love LOVED!
Overkill from Men at Work–has anyone heard the updated, acoustic version by Collin What’s-his-name? Its way cool!
Steppin’ Out–Joe Jackson
and Something About You by Level 42.
not big hits, but awesome songs, nonetheless!
kelley – I have always loved the motown versions they did….
Angela W. – oh I totally forgot about the old REM (Life’s Rich Pagent was my favorite LP! – I was a gold member of Columbia Records club! LOL!!)… Loved “superman” from that album.
Now that there are so many responses I don’t have time to read through them, but what about “Faith” by George Michael? 1987…..LOVE IT! Or “Freedom”….or really anything by George Michael!
How much money do you think Itunes has made off of us in the last few days….lol.
Sorry to crash your lady party, but I couldn’t resist and spent the weekend compiling a mental list. My poor wife (who is NOT a child of the 80s)… Sorry for the mass regurgitation and thanks for the variety to my Rhapsody playlist at work to all.
