I’m not completely out of touch with pop culture. I am aware of Lauren Conrad and her ongoing spat with Heidi and Spencer. Truth be told, I do not know why they are in a fight and apparently “hate” each other, but that’s neither here nor there and I really could care less about it at this point.
I’m starting fresh, moving on and writing my first BETA recap of The Hills today because that’s what “the people” wanted according to the poll.
With that said, let it be known that I have never once seen this show. I did watch one season of Laguna Beach when it was all about Kristin, Steven, LC, Talan, Dieter, Kelan, Jessica and obnoxious Jason. And I will say that it took me a few seconds to realize that LC is in fact Lauren Conrad.
Ah…a spin-off. Good to know. She’s my girl from the REAL Orange County.
Orange County. The OC. I miss Seth.
Anyway, since I’m not familiar with the show or its characters, it was too boring to write a recap. None of my thoughts flowed together and I can’t seem to make sense of some things. Instead of making you sit through a bunch of paragraphs that will probably put you to sleep faster than the episode did for me last night, I thought I would treat you to a rare glimpse of how I “work” when writing.
Therefore, I’ve decided to compile a list of noteworthy moments from Monday night’s show that stuck in my head as funny, odd, sad or just plain Jim Halpert face worthy. Enjoy.
The Hills
Episode 04.28.08
1. I’m going to call her LC because that’s what I know and am comfortable with. I’m guessing she’s around 23 or 24-years-old. And she’s buying a mansion. In Hollywood. With a guest house. Interesting. I’m digging this LO girl. She thinks that this is a perfect party house. Who cares if it has peeling paint and a gas leek…it’s got a great place to put the wet bar out back. FIERCE!
2. Oh…I love Natasha Bedingfield and the song “Unwritten.” Sort of makes me die on the inside a little bit that it’s the theme song of this show.
3. Already a house warming party? Do they have furniture? Maybe it doesn’t matter because there’s the big red “X” that marks the designated place for the keg by the tree. Young rich kids don’t need furniture I guess. Man. They talk a lot with food in their mouth. I guess time is money. Keep the conversation flowing. What’s this? A secret date with Stephen? I know him! He was Kristin’s boyfriend back in the original real OC days at Laguna. LO asks if he and LC are hanging out again. LC gives a sly grin and says that she never really stopped liking him.
Best line of the night by LO: “Oh! That melts my little black heart!”
Loving this girl.
4. Look. Another coffee house. It’s Spencer and his sister Stephanie. She orders a Chi Bola. Makes me think of Rocky, but whatever. Spence is complaining that he has the flu. Steph tells her bro that LC has invited her to a party. Spenc gets pissy and asks about family loyalty. He either needs to grow the beard or not. Pick one dude. Steph is complaining about how he became best friends with her ex-boyfriend and that this is the same. Spece says that he was not a boyfriend because she only went to semi-formal with him.
What the crap is a semi-formal? Do girls where corsages, sparkly strappy high heel shoes and qinceañera buns intertwined with baby’s breath while dawning business causal suits? I’m confused. Must be a real OC thing that I wouldn’t understand. Spence tells her that he is DONE and asks her to leave. The public coffee place. Like he owns the joint. She wants to discuss this situation like grown-ups. She is 20 after all. He wants to continue to be a wuss and stalks out with his germy Ozarka bottled water. It appeared VERY scripted to me.
5. LC wants to know if they have a pretty bowl for all the limes. LO reminds her that they are rich 20-somethings. When are they EVER going to use the kitchen when there are boys to take them to dinner and girlfriends to meet for lunch? HELLO! Then LO ponders if the neighbors have seen her naked yet. YET.
6. The three “friends” start talking about the boys they’ve invited to their party and the list is rattled off. Some dude named Justin was mentioned and a weird silence covered the group. Not sure what this is about, but the subject was changed to someone wearing a cowboy hat. LC says that she invited Stephen and Audrina asks if she invited him as a friend. LC says, “Don’t get all ninth grade on me.” Yeah. That was like three years ago.
7. Huh. There’s still a Real World on MTV? Wow.
8. Brody enters the party and gives them a juicer as a house warming gift. That was nice. Too bad LC is a little on the snotty side and tells him that they already have two. It’s called being a gracious hostess LC. I know your Mama or your nanny taught you better. We meet Brody’s girlfriend Cora. Nice look LC. I’m assuming they dated before?
9. Oh no. No, no, no. Is Heidi wearing black leather tights? Is this something that she’s trying to introduce to young impressionable girls? They are not ready Heidi. Fashions in the ‘80s were tough. It takes a special generation to pull off anything that remotely resembles pleather, hyper GLO or gloves without fingers. Just don’t go there.
Steph is picking her words carefully, trying to tell her that she’s going to attend LC’s party. Heidi exclaims, “You’re kidding!” Steph says, “I thought you would be cool with this. Now you are making me feel guilty.” Heidi then goes on to say that if she feels guilty, she knows she’s doing something wrong. “Where’s your loyalty?” Looks like Spencer gave her a head’s up about this party and told her EXACTLY what she needed to say when his traitorous sister showed up at her door. Heidi says that Steph needs to quit keeping secrets. Um. Hello Heidi? This is not a secret. She’s telling you that she was thinking about going. Nothing shady about this. It’s straight up honesty. Stephanie agrees with me and tells Heidi that this is so middle school. THANK YOU. I’M DYING HERE. Then she says that she won’t go and wants to watch a movie with Heidi. Maybe Flashdance or Electric Boogaloo in honor of Heidi’s pants.
10. Stephen shows up with a bag of bread as his housewarming gift. He must be from the other side of the tracks in the real OC. There’s that “Keep Bleeding” song. It seems to follow me wherever I go. LO tells LC that Brody’s girlfriend is pretty. Stephen comes up from behind and scares LO. He’s still cute. Very white teeth. Man…he loves his gum. LC shows Stephen something she is very proud of: a blooming flower on a vine. She’s proud because she personally picked the gardener and he does a great job. Still chomping gum. Nervous much Stephen?
11. Who’s this Justin fellow? What a cool Beverly Hills thug. He makes the rich kids uncomfortable even though he probably purchased his entire outfit from a store on Rodeo Drive. Oh! He touched the tiki torch fire. He’s a rebel. He’s in the mini mansion with Audrina. What are the black feathers around his face? Some weird pillow? They are talking about getting back together. Audrina’s shirt doesn’t have a back to it.
12. Steph is breaking the family loyalty rules and talking to LC at fashion school. I think I should braid my bangs and hold the end with a bobby pin. LC feels bad for getting Steph in trouble with her annoying brother and equally annoying girlfriend. She tells Steph that she’s going out with Stephen.
13. LC tells LO she is in the bathroom “doing makeups?” Interesting. She’s wearing a toga dress that she made herself at fashion school.
14. They leave for their date and go to a fancy restaurant. Here we are eating again. Talking with our mouths full again. Lots of discussion about how their parents like the other one. Stephen wonders why people can’t just see that they are good friends and this is strictly plutonic. Cuts a glance at LC. That was a test my friend. He’s unsure if you want to be more because of your recent success. She agrees that they will always be friends. BOOYAH!
15. One puff of wind and I’ll see her panties if she’s not careful. They reminisce about high school curfews. Really? People think this is interesting information? He talks about how he never drove his Toyota crazy because he had precious cargo. He looks to see if she thinks he is adorable. She does. They shake hands and she gets out of the car to go eat ice cream with LO who says that her dream is for them to one day work everything out and get married.
16. Closing credits.
It’s going to be a long season. Thank goodness Spencer’s a tool.
God bless you Lincee for recapping The Hills…I had no idea you never watched it. I thought you were a reality tv junkie like all of us who voted! Okay now i’m slightly embarrased for watching it for the past 3-4 years (I’m including Laguna Beach in this as well).
Anyway hilarious recap especially b/c you didn’t know anything about the show. I watched it online the other night and did you know an entire episode is only about 15-16 minutes? I know b/c I timed it in preparation for your recap. All morning I kept refreshing my google page where, thanks to the Webman, I now have your link posted so I can see exactly when you put a new post up. Anyway the first 2 minutes are a recap from the previous episode and intro credits then the show and then at the end there’s approx 2 minutes of previews/closing credits. Even during the show there’s probably 3 minutes (or more) of just scenes around LA…there is nothing of substance in the entire show yet I still yell at my computer if it freezes up during the middle of the show…so glad you are recapping this now.
This it TOO funny and I don’t even watch the show! Good work for your first time!!!
My theory is that is is totally scripted! In fact, I think Stephen came on the show to promote himself, and MAYBE a little to catch up. I think his comment was to make it CLEAR this was not a date. In my opinion, she wanted it to be.
I really don’t like LC very much. Too dramatic and self centered. LO is funny though.
They should show more funny party scenes… I remember those good old days, partying in my Hollywood mansion! Aaah, Its so good to revisit it!
I feel dumber (see what I mean, is that even a word?) after I watch this show, but just can’t help myself. Junk food for my brain! Glad you’re in on it with us now… you make it MUCH more funny!

Sigh. Okay, I’m about to embarrass myself incredibly. But since the population of Bachelor watchers put you in this position, I thought I’d help catch you up to speed on the Hills.
1. Lucky for you, I think the season must be almost over, or at least in the second half. Hold that near and dear to your heart at night.
2. Justin(aka Justin Bobby) dated Audrina last season. He’s a tool. He treated Audrina like crap at least 3 different times last season, not to mention they have some sort of past where he just left her in Vegas, and that’s why they broke up the first time. He also had really long hair last season, like dreads or something.
3. I think LC is actually around 21 or 22, which makes her shopping, eating out, and house buying that much worse.
4. Brody and LC sort of dated. A season or two ago she was interested in Brody, but some other chick “Jen Bunny” slept with him or something. LC doesn’t talk to her anymore. Last season, Brody and LC started to date or were headed that direction when she was sent to France for two weeks. The show treated two weeks in France like six months in France. The second day LC was there(this was the beginning of this season), she got a call from Audrina saying that Brody had a new girlfriend. That’s why LC gives him the cold shoulder.
5. Audrina and Heidi have sort of started hanging out again, hence the awkwardness with LC and Audrina.
6. I think the fight about LC and Heidi is that LC thinks Heidi and Spencer spread rumors about some sort of sex tape LC made with Jason. I’m not even sure the thing exists, but the rumor is that one was made. You’re thinking “What the crap?” Yeah, me too. Not exactly feud material, unless I’m missing something.
I think that’s it. I’m horrified I know all of that information, but it’s a ridiculous guilty pleasure I had with my old roommate, and I never kicked the habit.
OK, so 3rd is not bad. I usually get here after 72!

Was anyone else astounded by was how fast they moved into the house – no house shopping, no realtors, nothing just bam they’re in a mansion in LA. Did LC buy it or does the show rent it for them…?
Lincee have you seen heidi’s music video yet? I’m the one embarrasing myself now b/c a few months back perez hilton had Heidi’s very own music video up and you must see it! it was horrible and i just read in an US magazine last week (I think last week’s episode) that Natasha Bedingfield was going to do a duet with Heidi…say it isn’t so Natasha!
Lincee – Wonder if they have previous seasons of The Hills on DVD? If so, you can watch the whole shabang in one weekend (like I did with Sex and the City), and decide if you have any interest. If you don’t, toss out the recap and do one you truly consider a (guilty) pleasure. The Bachelor recaps work b/c you love The Bachelor. Stick with what you’re passionate about, or you’ll just end up dreading each and every Thursday. The writing is top notch of course, but I could practically feel how underwhelmed you were.
#7…I think that Lauren actually bought the house herself. It was in US Weekly a few months ago. I did think it was odd that last week, they are talking about “maybe” getting a house. And this week they are all moved in and having a housewarming party!
I would assume that she is able to pay for the house b/c of her clothing line? I haven’t really seen much of the line but it looks a little young for me personally but it is very cute!!

Lincee, LC really needs to get over the feud with Heidi. The show used to be so much better but they keep focusing on the non-existent sex tape with Jason (yeah THAT Jason from Laguna!) Megan, great job on the recap – I’m embarrassed right along with you. : )
Anybody catch Heidi on Letterman last night? Yikes ….. she looks like a blow up doll and has about the same to offer. When God was giving out brains, she thought he said rain and covered up her head.
She did buy the house herself. I think MTV pays her quite a bit, plus the fashion line.
They have already mentioned the next season of the Hills. And Spencer and Heidi are after their own spinoff…a la Newlyweds…ugh.
Lincee, god love ya for trying but you don’t HAVE to recap this show just because we voted on it. I voted for the Hills but had NO IDEA that you didn’t watch it. I thought you were a fan and thus you’d be hilariously pointing out all the producer set ups, fake interactions, etc. If you’ve never seen it and it bores you and you have no idea what’s going on, then don’t do it. We’ll still love you all the same. The Bacehlor recaps are amazing because you are such a fan of the show and know it inside and out. If you want to do additional recaps, maybe you should set up a poll yourself with ONLY shows that you watch and love?
#11 I just laughed out loud at work! Never heard that one before….and its totally right. I saw her on Regis & Kelly and she had nothing to offer. And Spencer was waiting offstage, of course, in a suit, of course. Can’t this guy wear anything else?

Ditto #8 & 18. Lincee, I feel you should pick the shows you would like to recap, the shows you hate to love and easy to make fun. Even if others don’t watch it, your recap might intrigue people to tune in. I haven’t watched the bachelor in 3 years, and you got me back on the bandwagon.
BTW, your comment on Stephen’s gum made me LOL, though. My boyfriend and I used to hate Spencer, but now he provides comic relief on that show. Also, side note – Justin Bobby is gross. He would burp in Audrina’s face, make her wait b/c he was always late, and he would check out other girls while out with her. AND he kissed a girl at a club after leaving the booth where he was sitting with Audrina and her FRIENDS (who of course saw)- which ultimately broke them up the second time (first time, I think, is when he left her in Vegas). Audrina is the STUPIDEST girl I know for going back. It’s slightly humiliating.

Love that you’re recapping this show, but I agree that you don’t have to if you don’t like watching it! It’s a guilty pleasure for me. I’m addicted even though these people are idiots and it’s obviously scripted. I would just add some others’ comments:
1. Yes, Lo is great, very funny. Also, Whitney is cool. Even if the way she talks can be annoying sometimes.
2. Lauren used to go by LC in the Laguna days. She’s cool, but can be snobby and self-centered, and actually quite boring.
3. Audrina is boring as well, and pretty dumb.
4. Justin – that is his real name but was thinking about changing it to Bobby. So Lo started calling him Justin Bobby. The fact that he’s back really irks me. What a loser. The scenes from last year with him and Audrina were painful to watch. So stupid.
5. I actually agree with Heidi and Spencer that Stephanie doesn’t need to be so friendly with Lauren. She obviously just wants to be famous.
Also, what the heck is a chi bola?
The Hills is a tough go even if you like the show! With the long MTV commercial breaks you probably only have 12 minutes of material and even loving the show those 12 minutes can be painful. What are a few of your other favorite shows? I was under the impression you liked ANTM, I am sticking with my vote for that. Tyra, the girls, the photogs, “smile with your eyes”. There is plenty of dirt there. Or, if you want to stay on ABC’s good side, go with another one of their shows.

FYI: Apparently LC and her ex Jason made a sex tape- because that’s what you do when you are a D list celeb trying to drum up some publicity. However, things got a little out of hand when spencer & heidi started referring to the tape to the media and calling LC … get this… Beef Curtains! Lauren was so mad that this embarrasing nick name got out to the public that she wrote off Heidi and her scheming boyfriend, destroyed and denied the tape, and organized a I hate Heidi club.
So, now you know the “beef” between the two frienemies…

I have to admit, The Hills is a guilty pleasure for me so I was one of those who voted for the recap. I hope you hang in there, Lincee! You did a great job and made me laugh even though you had never seen the show previously. Steven/the gum – Spencer/whining – Audrina/no back on her shirt! Lo is so cute and funny. I love how loyal she is to Lauren. And, personally, I like Lauren a lot. I think she is a strong girl and mature for her age. I think she’s pretty smart, too.
Oh – but about loyalty. Pleeeease! Can’t Stephanie be friends with Lauren if she finds her to be a nice person? Why should the issues with Heidi and Spencer prevent them from having a friendship? My brother is friends with someone I can’t stand and this guy was pretty rude to me on several ocassions. However, I dont think my brother owes it to me to only be friends with the people I click with. He obviously found things about this guy that he really likes (beyond me, but whatever). I know my brother would put this guy in his place if he ever dissed me in front of him or to him so I dont need to call for “loyalty” by trying to control who he is friends with. Spencer actually said something previously about Brody being friends with Lauren to the effect of “If you’re friends with my enemy than that makes you my enemy,” and then he cut off his friendship with Brody because of it. I think Spencer is THE most immature person on this show.
#8 Nikki says it all perfectly: If you don’t really “get” the show and don’t enjoy it, please don’t force yourself to recap it, simply because it won a poll. I don’t watch the Hills and after seeing WAY too much of two of the smarmiest media whores on the planet (Spencer and Heidi) there’s no way I will. It just seems like a poor follow-up for your immense writing skills and entertainment capabilities.
#20 Linz – excuse my ignorance but what does “Beef Curtains” mean?
Also, Lincee, Real World Hollywood just started up about 2 weeks ago and would be a great show to recap. They have a stripper who is only doing it for the money (but dresses the part every show), a guy who wants to kill himself, a southern Faith Hill look-a-like bigot, a jackass who thinks he’s God’s gift to the world, a boring girl who has a boyfriend and some other guy (not to be confused with “Some Guy” from your recap blog). Good stuff.
And finally, in reference to Some Guy from your Bachelor Recap, if you’re single and he’s single, you should get together – you’d make beautiful children! You’re both freaking riots!
HALT THE HILLS RECAPS!!! Lincee, there’s a new show that seems to be a Bachelor spin off. It’s called “Farmer Wants a Wife” on the CW. I had absolutely no interest, and still don’t, but it was DVRd, so I thought I’d check it out. A farmer man, named Matt(go figure!), can’t find love with any women in his small rural town, so “city women” are being dragged to the country in hopes he can find love with one of them. These city women are also tired of city men. Right now, they’re introducing themselves, and they say why they hate city men. Ha. This would be WAY more entertaining than the Hills recaps, b/c it has train wreck written all over it. Also, the season just started this week!
Okay, I had to update. I’m at the end of the Farmer Wants a Wife. Instead of a rose ceremony, the ladies go into a barn. There are stands in the barn, each with a chicken in a coop, with a girl’s name on it. They take the chickens and their nest out, and if there is an egg under the chicken, then they get to stay. SERIOUSLY!?! Oh yeah, their group date was a hayride. Individual date: a park bench underneath a canopy, with mint juleps to drink. Not making this up, folks. Wish I was…
I love the Hills and am so happy that you are recaping. I think the fact that you have not seen it since the Laguna Beach days makes it even better. Keep it up!

I hate that Spencer kid, and I’m glad the show portrays him as the douchebag he is… also, I think the semi-formal thing might be a California thing? We had them when I was in high school – they were lame excuses to have dances in between prom and homecoming dances that were not quite as formal as proms.

More Hills updating for those just in the loop…yes, shamefully I have watched since way back in the Laguna days too…
Spencer gets his money from Daddy. His Daddy is a high priced dentist to the stars, hence the reason he has HUGE veneers on his teeth. I am sure MTV pays him something, but that is where his funds (and Stephanie’s) are coming from. He and Brody (Jenner – yes, Bruce’s son) grew up together. When the HIlls first started he was Brody’s “manager”. That is just plain laughable to me. Once the whole drama with the sex tape started Spencer wrote Brody off as a friend because Brody was going to remain friends with LC. The funny thing is, Brody didn’t skip a beat. He dated LC a little and has gotten more air time now that he and Spencer aren’t friends.
Also, last year Heidi’s lips and chest weren’t as large as they are now. She had some work done and denied it for a while until websites started posting side by side photos of her. Heidi and Spencer are using their 15 minutes like no one’s business. They use every photo-op possible to promote themselves. If you read any gossip website they are constantly posted and it is quite annoying. The crazy part is Spencer is apparently the “master mind” behind it all. Heidi was recently invited to the White House Correspondence Dinner and Spencer was not. As her manager he insisted that he be flown in for it as well…he wanted 1st class seats, etc. Whoever the news agency was that invited Heidi ended up cancelling the invitation because of him. However, he won in the end becasue some other news organization ended up paying for him to come and they went to the dinner. I saw this morning that they were at the Kentucky Derby this past weekend….why? I read a quote from Spencer last week that said something to the effect of he doesn’t care if people hate him…they are all just jealous because they sit at a cubicle and aren’t on a reality show like him. This guy is the absolute KING OF TOOLS!

OMG, I am losing it over the beef curtain. My coworkers think I am crazy because I can’t stop laughing!!! Ok, personally, I liked the Real OC (the first season). I tried watching the second season and the Hills, but they just don’t seem interesting enough…and I agree, too many commercials.
Lincee, I found your recap to be classic. The fact that you knew nothing about the show, made it hilarious. And yes, Spencer is a tool!
I agree with #23 – Real World is ridiculously fun and I am way OLD to be watching MTV! The Hills is too scripted and edited AND THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY LONG PAUSES. How many times do you sit around with your friends and just stare at each other eye to eye for minutes and not say a word. Bizarre. Plus, I think LC is cute and all but she really doesn’t have what it takes to carry a show.
I think the only reason Spencer has money is that he’s a member of the “lucky sperm club.” He reminds me of a Leprechaun for some reason. I think Heidi could have gotten someone better a while back but now that she’s shot plastic in every orifice of her body – I think she and Spencer are a golden couple.

Lincee, I can’t get into The Hills either, maybe it would be better if I had seen past seasons, but I was bored too. Seriously though… have you seen “Farmer wants a wife?” I watched it last week and couldn’t stop laughing… I told my friend Tara that the only thing better than watching it would be to read your recap of it! But I do agree with previous posters who said you should only recap shows that you love!
Also, I was wondering… are you recapping for the Bachlorette too?
I think we should all agree and let Lincee out of this agreement that she write on another show… I love the Hills and I love the fact that Lincee has tried to write about the show, but seriously, she’s not a machine.
