Daddy: “It’s been great having you home this weekend.”
Lincee: “Thanks Daddy! I’ve had fun.”

Daddy: “When are you coming back?”
Lincee: “I don’t know. I’m not sure of my work schedule this fall.”

Daddy: “You should come back for Hallsville Western Days.”

Lincee allows herself to reminisce for a few minutes remembering past Western Days. She recalls the energy restored in the small town as its citizens gear up for the rival football game, reuniting with old friends at the street dance downtown, the parade that consists of old cars, the volunteer fire truck and about a million tiny twirlers from the local dance school.

Daddy: “There’s going to be a Civil War re-enactment in our front yard.”
Lincee: stunned silence

Note to reader: We live on 15 acres.

Daddy: “I’m serious. The North is going to be over there and the South is going to be down there. They are going to battle right here in front of the house.”
Lincee: “Naturally.”

Daddy: “We had to move the chili cook-off to the west side of the property.”
Lincee: “Well that makes sense.”

Daddy: “There’s going to be an old-fashioned dance in the driveway and your Mother is hosting a tea in the house. She wants to dress up like Scarlet O’Hara.”
Lincee: “And she should.”

I’m going to go ahead and let you guess where I will be on October 3. Western Days can not come fast enough!

Fun! I heart the South! Btw, I went to a funeral of a man who was involved in Civil War reenactments, and (for a funeral) it was actually kind of cool because all the members of the society were dressed in the authentic garb and shot off rifles and whatnot.

  6. JL Said,

    Please post LOTS of photos.

  9. Me Said,

Sounds very interesting. As a California girl, I am very very curious about all this. And curious in a good way, I love to experience new things. It is so cool that you can take part in good ole fashioned fun, we don’t get much of that here. There is definitely something to say about community and culture. I am drooling thinking about all the yummy food you will probably have there.

Christy - Love the Sweet Home Alabama mention, I was thinking that too!!!

  10. Liz G. Said,

How weird - I was in Marshall this weekend - we could have met at the Sonic and had a Cherry Vanilla Limeade!! (I would have treated!) May even be there that weekend in October - but only ’cause Mama wants to go to the horse races (go figure!). Of course, if she knows there’s a Civil War Reinactment in your Daddy’s front yard, she might be willing to go the opposite direction!

  11. Tater Mama Said,

I thought of Sweet Home Alabama, too!

Lincee, I am such a fan and can’t tell you how many times I have laughed so hard that I’ve cried! I’m at home with a 2-year-old right now, but used to teach with a group of girls who watched The Bachelor mainly because we wanted to be able to keep up with your blog! Reading your recaps is so much fun, and I’m really enjoying your whole blog. :)

  12. Trixie Said,

Lordy, Lordy, Miss Scarlett! What a fun time you’ll have!! My dear departed uncle was a mountain man and he and his people (for lack of a better term) would have been right there with you all. Thank heavens at his funeral, his guys wore their Sunday best, and left their whatnots at home.

  20. Jill L Said,

Sweet Home Alabama was the first thought I had as well….. but what I want to know is does McDreamy get to be your fiance in this lovely reinactment?! You should call him.

We’re all anxious for lots of pictures and MJ is totally right that a video camera is in order too!!!

  21. Chance Said,

I haven’t been to Western Days since 1993 when I served in the dunking booth to raise money for the mighty 2-and-8 Hallsville Bobcats football team. But I remember the parades, and you seem to have left out two parade participants that are at least as important as the volunteer fire truck and the little twirlers. There were the Shriners (definition: 80-year-old men in thimble-shaped hats driving go-carts in figure eights at speeds up to 35 mph) and the Miss Hallsville contestants waving like the Queen of England from the back of whatever convertible was available. See L. Ray, 1993 runner-up, Miss Hallsville runner-up (she was robbed).

Lincee - I don’t have this picture, but I KNOW you do,and I’m sure your readers are going to need to see you on the back of that convertible Geo Traker to fully appreciate Hallsville Western Days. Post it.

And for more info on Western Days, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallsville,_Texas. That’s right, we got Wiki’d, and all the world can now know about Western Days and other facts like this: “Until 2003, Hallsville was a one traffic light town, with the main intersection at Main Street (Hwy 80) and Hwy 450 being the only one with a traffic light. The town has experienced rapid growth in the past decade, and now boasts five traffic lights, a larger corporate grocery store chain, a medical and dental clinic, two dollar stores and several fast-food chains.” It ain’t just DQ anymore. And did you know that Kurt Cobain was inducted into the H Association Football Hall of Fame?

P.S. Your mother will make a perfect Scarlett.

  22. KatieM Said,

My son wants to know what I am laughing at. Too funny!
I will be singing “Sweet Home Alabama” in my head till I fall asleep.
