For years, I thought dance was going to be my profession when I grew up. Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader, Mickey Mouse Club or Broadway–it didn’t matter–as long as I was dancing.

Clearly, I’m not involved with any of those organizations and two ACL surgeries sort of put the kibosh on any serious dancing career paths. Therefore…I have to live vicariously through others.

Like the kids on So You Think You Can Dance or actors in movies like Step Up.

Or High School Musical. PLEASE DON’T STOP READING! COME BACK!

My confession to you is that I have seen High School Musical and the sequel several times. I have favorite songs. I have favorite characters. And yes I get embarrassed when Zac Efron sings on the golf course, but who doesn’t? That’s why the fast forward button was invented.

So you can imagine my elation when my friend Caroline agreed to go see High School Musical 3: Senior Year with me and every other junior high girl in the Houston metroplex. Of course, I loved it. And here’s why:

TOP 5 REASONS WHY HSM3 IS WORTH WATCHING:

5. It’s up to us grown-ups to explain to the children of America that high school is NOT as shiny and happy as East Side. And you can’t spontaneously throw confetti at a basketball game. It’s distracting to the players.

4. The little boy three seats down who makes faces when Troy and Gabriella kiss. CLASSIC!

3. The scene where Troy and Chad dance in the junk yard. I’m a sucker for boys dancing though. Ten bucks that song is in some fraternity’s SING act at Baylor next year.

2. The choreography of Kenny Ortega.
This is the man who brought you Dirty Dancing and Newsies! And he’s currently remaking one of my favorites…FOOTLOOSE! Not sure how I really feel about that. Can anyone else play Ren McCormack besides the Bacon? And has it been long enough to warrant a remake? (One quick check from IMDB.com and the answer is: 1984. I’m old.)

1. Hearing the little girls scream and gasp when Zac Efron flashed on the screen for the first time. It was priceless! And the nervous giggling when he took his shirt off in the locker room so he could change into his Wildcat jersey was adorable. Wait. That was me giggling.

Oh to be young-at-heart trapped in a grown-up world…

So who’s with me? High School Musical isn’t that bad, right? Someone? Anyone?

  1. marla Said,

ok lincee – it was bad. my friend jenny just emailed me and said “SEE! we are not losers! Lincee saw it!!”
so that was pretty funny. it was cheesy but the price of admission was worth the audience and the twittering and the live realityness of the teenage girls in the theater. oh yeah, and when jenny screamed really loud when zac was on the screen – that was classic. to be a kid again! that’s why i liked this movie!! :)

  2. marla Said,

and didn’t you almost bust a gut in the junkyard scene when the little kids ran out as zac and the other kid from under the car?? tiny little zac and what’s his bucket?!!!

  3. Big Mama Said,

Loved it. Went to see it this weekend with my five year old as my cover story.

If I were Demi Moore and going the Cougar route, I’d totally have picked Zac Efron over Ashton. Even though he sings on golf courses.

  4. Jess Said,

I totally saw it this weekend too and am not ashamed to admit it! I had to tag along with my friend and her 7 year old daughter though, because no one else my age would go see it. The junk yard scene was my absolute favorite part! And it was ME, not the little preteens, who gasped when Troy’s bright blue eyes popped up on the screen. That Zac Efron is just too pretty for words. My other highlight – the two little girls in front of me, maybe 4 years old, very solemnly discussing Troy’s armpit hair!

  5. adriana Said,

I haven’t seen any of them, but I am all for people going to see them! We know Corbin (Chad) through this weird family connection and I’m super excited that he’s doing so well! Nicest family ever.

  6. Jana Said,

This is my first comment to leave you, but I have been a faithful reader for some time now. I just wanted to say that as a Baylor grad myself (’99), I thought the exact same thing as reason #3. Yes, I am a proud 31 year old mother of 2, who LOVES HSM!

  7. Veronica Said,

I can’t wait to see it! I was hoping I would already have my little (Big Brothers Big Sisters) by now, so I could take her..for her sake, of course! :)

  8. musicalapalooza Said,

OH HSM, what you do to us. You get us hummng “Breakin’ Free” at work. Whenever someone asks, “What time is it?” , you know we yell “SUMMERTIME!” And yes, Zac’s blue eyes make us gasp. (Although the golf course scene? Worst 3:59 minutes of musical ever, but we shall forgive you). What are we to do? Except see every HSM that comes out, from HSM- Senior Year to HSM- Senior Centre. sigh.

  9. the Canadians Said,

HSM has its merits, yes, but Newsies has got to be my all time favorite. Anybody else?

  10. Andrea Said,

Right on sista, HSM rules. I can’t wait to take my girls. I have to tell you that immediately after watching the first one, my 7 year old said, in a dreamy voice while watching the credits “I can’t wait to be in high school.” I didn’t have the heart to tell her at that moment, but I have since then, that kids don’t spontaneously bust out into song and the chances of being in a perfectly choreographed dance in the cafeteria is slim. I know, total buzz kill. Can’t wait for HSM3 – I’m sure she CAN wait for me to rain on her parade some more.

  11. Shelly Said,

I can’t wait to see HSM3 and neither can my 12 year old daughter!

All I can say is “We’re all in this together…………..” sing it with me now! :)

  12. JulieB Said,

Ok, I have not seen HSM3, but if you ever considered, dreamed of being a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader, you have to watch “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader: Making the Team 3″ on CMT. Its so great…you can’t help but get emotional over who gets slammed by Kelly, cheer for the cherography’s daughter to make it, yell at the girls who mess up, and cry over those called into Kelly’s office. Its great television for us dancer want to bes!

  13. Amy Said,

Loved the first two and am so sad that I wasn’t able to make it to opening weekend! Hopefully by the time I get to the theater there will still be the screaming and giggling girls! :)

  14. Karie Said,

Ok, my girls love HSM, and we can’t wait to see the 3rd! I have to admit I didn’t want to fight the crowds opening weekend with a 5 and 2 year old in tow. Oh yes, my 2 year old is a fan as well, knows all the words to “Fabulous”! In all fairness, she will be 3 in a month.:-) And to agree with JulieB, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders making the team is some of the best reality tv out there. The way that Kelly can insult someone without moving her lips is amazing! I hate to admit that I am hooked…

  15. Betsi Said,

I just figured out the perfect holiday gift for you…your photo on an HSM3 AMC gift card! If only they had these for the Bachelor as well! When does the next season start?!

  16. Christy Said,

I am with you! I saw it twice with my girls (ages 8 & 11) on Friday. The first time as a birthday party with my 8 year old and 16 of her friends…after taking girls to the bathroom SIX times, I decided I’d drag my girls back for the late movie. Loved it and not ashamed to admit it.

  17. Randee Said,

Ok, confession, I’ve seen it TWICE already. The first was the BEST with a completely packed audience, almost cultlike with the kids screaming (my daughter is 9 1/2 and we were with 4 of her friends), cringing and covering their eyes when there was kissing and me loving Corbin!!!! And, the junkyard scene, the BEST! (and I am SUCH a Footloose fan (in fact, went to our 1/2 price book store to buy it yesterday cuz the memories were flooding back—several of the HSM3 songs/dances were tre reminescent). Oh, the fun of it all. The first time thru we moms were giggling at the predictability of when the songs would start, the introduction of the “next cast” for HSM4 (subtle, but HELLO, the new Troy and Sharpay clearly introduced to create flow), and the ultimate, fabulous cheesiness of it all. 2nd time, I cried at the end (ok, so I am nuts but I have at least one other friend who confessed to the same). I was (oy vey) 12 apparently when Ren made his debut and am interested to see it again (tho, no remake is better than the original!). The clapping along with songs and the cheering/clapping at the end made this movie all that more fun! A definite must see, and even better with a packed theater!

  18. Randee Said,

oh, and tiny zac and corbin were the BEST BEST BEST! I could watch that scene over and over again!

  19. Elisabeth Said,

I too went to see it on opening day. My 8 year old sister insisted we all go together, even my 5 month old neice- who oh so cutely, would coo when Zac was on the screen and the theater was actually quiet. I had to laugh at the large group of pre-teen girls that were in my row as they screamed VERY loudly when they first saw Troy and were all giddy when he was taking off his shirt. I’ll admit that I did mist up at the end, so cute! And I agree the junkyard scene was the best- it reminded me of my favorite movie- Sing- a late 80′s movie staring Lorainne Bracco, Peter Dobson, Jessica Stein & Patti LaBelle. I do believe that the entire HSM collection will eventually be a part of my DVD collection. Great movie!

  20. starshine Said,

“Ten bucks that song is in some fraternity’s SING act at Baylor next year.”

    CLASSIC!

  21. Tessa Said,

A couple of my friends and I (all of us well out of college now) had a High School Musical viewing marathon over the weekend in preparation to see HSM3 on Monday night. While the movie theater was devoid of pre-teen girls sighing over Zac Efron, my friends and I happily gushed and awed throughout the movie. Amazing! The movies will all go into my DVD repertoire!

  22. debbie Said,

I am totally with you, girl! I posted about it on my blog last Friday!! I think I may have lost some friends with that one. :)

  23. Joanna Said,

zac efron has been signed to play Ren McCormack in the new Footloose!!

  24. Team Edward | ihategreenbeans.com - The blog of Lincee Ray Said,

[...] box and defend myself like I did to numerous concerned friends and family members after posting my High School Musical 3: Senior Year thoughts. I was afraid that I would come home one day with all my friends on my couch ready to [...]

  25. Emily Said,

Okay, Lincee, you’re right. The movie, wait, film rather, was unbelievable!

  26. Trixie Said,

The #1 reason for any female over the age of 5 to go see HSM3 is Zac Efron. Come on girls, he’s hot. I’m 37 and I didn’t have a crush on any celebrity boys when I was younger, but if I thought my husband would let me, I’d put a poster of Zac on my bedroom wall.
