Team Edward

So I’m a 15-year-old stuck in a 30-something-year-old body. Sue me.

I was introduced to the Twilight books when they first came out and could care less about them because they were about vampires. And I don’t do vampires.

But my friend Heather insisted that I read the books and overlook the “vampire-ness” of it all because she knows I’m a SUCKER (ha!) for a good romance. Heather and I are both creative, love the same movies and are infatuated with Johnny Depp, so I decided that she could be trusted.

I read the first book in two days. And the next three followed in 10 days. And I convinced my sister to read them too. And she’s OLDER than ME!!!

Even though I try to live my life publically on IHGB.com, I resisted the urge to create a post on how excited I am about the new movie coming out this weekend. I didn’t want to step up on another soap box and defend myself like I did to numerous concerned friends and family members after posting my High School Musical 3: Senior Year thoughts. I was afraid that I would come home one day with all my friends on my couch ready to conduct an intervention where they make me to take a good hard look at the date on my driver’s license, force me to watch some grown-up Oscar movie like There Will Be Blood and then make me remove Gossip Girl from my DVR playlist.

Then I received an amazing, heart-felt email from IHGB reader Brittany:

“I love your website and it is the sole reason for me watching the Bachelor anymore! I also love musicals and tween pop culture. So, I was wondering why you haven’t mentioned Twilight??? It is the BEST book. If it wasn’t a sin I would admit that I like it more than Harry Potter, but I wouldn’t dare say that out loud. If you haven’t read it you need to and then talk about it!”

I’m going to assume Brittany is a 30-something-year-old too and embrace my opportunity to get pumped about seeing this dude 80 feet high in the air…

And if there is any doubt, I’m on TEAM EDWARD and will be wearing this shirt Heather designed on opening night:

I want to hear from you in the comment section. Team Edward? Or Team Jacob?

(If you are interested in other Twilight t-shirts, visit Heather’s site.)

  1. Cilantro13 Said,

    You too? Really?

First I deal with this at home from my wife (who has informed me I AM babysitting this weekend so she and her mom can see it), and now on the bachelor recaps. Sheesh.

I am on team eye roll.

(For the record and the purposes of full disclosure, I will admit that I have read all but the last book which is collecting dust on my bookshelf while I digest other reading projects. I read them so I could understand the mania that had taken over my wife (and to know to what I am being compared… Edward would NOT do the dishes right after dinner, just for the record. He would wait until his food digested too. Just saying.). They were ok stories, but a little too much dialogue and not enough action for me… but I think that is a gender thing. I have always thought it would be better if the bite on Bella’s hand had given just that one had some supernatural ability or if the bite had led her to sort of straddle the vampire human word. I digress.)

And for the record, I like Jacob more. Bella and Jacob have the more real connection. Edward and Bella’s relationship is like getting a date with the hot girl only to get to the restaurant and find that you don’t really have much in common but you keep dating her because you are infatuated with her hotness. Not exactly the foundation of a long term relationship.

And now ladies, feel free to rip that analysis apart the way Edward rips apart Bambi twice a month.

(Aside: It is weird posting on a blog where I don’t know anybody from Adam (Eve?), outside of discussions of the bachelor on the topic of Twighlight and where 95% of the readers are of the fairer sex. I should stop. Like right now.)

  2. Kaitlin Said,

Lincee! Words cannot describe how pleased I am that my absolute favorite blogger, YOU, have developed an attachment to Edward and all things Twilight. What I wouldn’t have given to have gotten to chat with you about the books as devoured them, which I did as well. I have no shame about the fact that I am completely outside of the Twilight demographic :) TEAM EDWARD all the way, baby! I know you get approximately thousands of comments, but I’d love it if you checked out my blog. I’m just starting to write a few recaps myself, and I often add irresistible Twilight photos-I just can’t help myself. http://www.domesticexperiences.blogspot.com
Thanks for being such an amazing, incredible writer-definitely the funniest writing I’ve ever read! Are you sure you don’t have an additional career on the horizon in entertainment?

  3. M Said,

Oh Lincee, thank you for fessing up to the love of Twilight! I have to say that when I first read the books — all in one sitting that lasted for about five days — my kids ate cereal three meals a day and the laundry and dishes piled up around me. Every time my husband sees me reading, I have to tell him “I’m not finished yet” instead of admitting to him that I am reading them over and over. My ticket to the movie has been bought, and I have planned to go in the middle of the day, so that all my high school babysitters don’t see me there and think I am having an early mid-life crisis. It feels good to know I am not alone. And yes, I have Gossip Girl on my DVR, too.

  4. Jaime Said,

Hey, I’m 32 and in the same boat! I’m going to a Thursday Midnight showing of the movie, and I’ll be (proudly) wearing a shirt that says Cold Hands Are Hot!

  5. M Said,

Oh — and of course . . . Team Edward!!

  6. adriana Said,

I have the book at home, and am planning on reading it this weekend. I just KNOW I’m going to become addicted, and have been putting it off since I have eight hundred other things I should be doing. Bah! I am such a sucker!

  7. Mary Said,

TEAM EDWARD! So glad you admitted to your obsession. I too ignored my friends at first who told me to read this because I thought it would be too sci-fi. Thank goodness I did! And I know I’m too old for this but I do have tickets to the midnight showing… :)

  8. Jana Said,

I caved after my 13 year old babysitter finally convinced me that these were the most awesome books ever. I am only on the second book, but I am on team Edward. I love him and will be VERY disappointed if the actor playing him in the movie does not live up to my standards:).

  9. Jess Said,

There are no words to describe how excited I am about seeing Twilight this weekend!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the books (the first and third ones are my favorite) and I most definitely am on Team Edward. *Sigh*

  10. Erica Said,

Team EDWARD! I just started the third book on Monday. I read the first two weeks ago, and got 2 and 3 and bday gifts Saturday night. I finished 2 on Sunday! I was addicted within the first few minutes. I don’t know what I am going to do when I finish 4.

  11. Myra Said,

I am soooo Team Edward!! I loved the Twilight saga and have recommended it to many of my clients, (I am a hairstylist) and friends. Can’t wait for the movie this weekend! oh, and I’m 47 years old!! Go Team Edward…and yes, bite me too please!

  12. Tamara Said,

ha ha! My YL gals think this book is and I quote “sooo sexy”. They were reading them all summer and bringing them to campaigners instead of their bibles. They wanted me to go to the movie with them and I had to tell them I’m sure the movie will just be tooooo sexy for me. They loved that! Have fun at the movies friend:)

  13. Alison Said,

Oh my God. Just when I think I couldn’t love you more, you go and do something like this.
    By the way, TEAM EDWARD!

  14. Brooke Said,

This was my first time checking out your blog and I will tell you, I WILL be coming back for more. I don’t necessarily believe that there is anything wrong with the grown women (like myself) who are border line obsessed with Edward. Contrarily, I believe that there is something VERY wrong with ANY woman who is not enraptured by the enigma that is Edward Cullen.

  15. Stephanie Said,

I am 41, just finished Twilight and am hooked. I wasn’t sure about Robert Stinson (?) for the lead but the more I see the pictures, the more I am convinced. I am working on getting the rest of the books from the comfort of my home. I don’t know enough to be Team Edward or Team Jacob. I say – keep the discussions going on this. You will find more “cougars” out there interested in this young Edward :)

  16. Julie Said,

Team Edward here! So glad you posted about this. We are going to the midnight showing tomorrow(HOLY CRAP IT’S TOMORROW!!!!) night! Can’t wait.

Funny story. So I can’t get enough of twilight. I like reading twilight fanfic too. So I was reading a story the other day, my son who is 3 was doing something he shouldn’t have been doing, I went to tell him off and instead of saying his name I said “EDWARD! I mean Kamron!” haha

  17. Malita Said,

I was team Edward all the way – Jacob is great as a friend and helps her out so much – though she becomes way too dependent on him in my opinion – but Edward is well…Edward! Nough said.

Ps I stumbled on these books by reading The Host when it came out in June (totally backwards) that is a GREAT book as well – worth the read!

  18. Malita Said,

Ps for the men that do not get it – he’s a man written and dreamed up by a woman! She knows what we want…

  19. Lisa Said,

    Aaaaa TEAM EDWARD!!!!!! YAY

  20. Catharine Said,

I also “don’t do” vampires, but I have to say that I was told to read The Historian several years ago and it is one of the best books I have ever read. VERY long, but I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend it! Even though I loved it, I’m still not into vampires and wasn’t sure about the Twilight books, but I think now I will have to read them all because of Lincee! I’m not sure who Edward or Jacob are, but Cedric Diggory is hot! (And yes, I am 33, mom of 2 and love tween pop culture!)

  21. Ruth Said,

Hey, I’m 43 and I read them all too. I am definitely on Team Edward, but I confess to a small hope that the movie is better than the book. Hey, I’m all for a good mushy romance, and I do love the Vampire storyline (Buffy? Angel? Classic! And True Blood? Yummy!) for its “bad boy” hook. But. Bella is seriously a head case with self esteem issues that are never really resolved until Book 4, and even then, only by being someone she’s not. I think it’s a problem really, and chatted with my 16 year old niece about it. She agreed, we talked, and then we just gushed about Edward. :)

  22. Cat Said,

So, at the request of a 40-something friend, I read Twilight and LOVED it. I guess I have been living under a rock because I did not know there were other books!!!! What are the titles (and the order in which I will read them this weekend)????

  23. nicole Said,

    TEAM EDWARD!!!!
I have to say, my story is much the same as most of the above. Was so against reading it but when I finally did, read them all in about a week and half!

  24. faboo Said,

Team Edward 4Eternity! I love vampires. And I LOVE Edward. Therefore, I LOVE Twilight. I’m a 34-yr old Vampire lover, and every man on the planet should read these books. They hold the key to unlock the mysteries of a woman.
    And Lincee Rocks.

  25. Your sis Said,

First of all, look who can now see your website at work…I’m so excited…not that you’re still not considered entertainment…they just decided to let the adults be adults! Yay!

Yes, I was talked into reading the books…and I must say, thanks Lincee! It’s still worth it even when my husband rolls his eyes.

I’m only on the third book, but I will stand with TEAM EDWARD as of this time.

  26. Mandy Said,

um…LOVE IT!! Love the book, love Edward, love the t-shirt, love the blog….LOVE IT!!! I, too, am a 15 (maybe even 14) year old trapped in a 29 year old’s body. I love HSM, GG, 90210, Privileged, Twilight, and many others that I’m too embarrassed to mention. I applaud you for your bravery in posting this blog – stand proud fans of tween!!!

  27. Shelley Said,

SO glad I am not alone. I’m 29 and I am in love with the Twilight series!

  28. AJ Said,

Alright, I’ll be the oddball here. I adore Edward and without giving anything away from later books, I can say that I am 100% Team Edward at this point in time. However, through the majority of the books I was Team Jacob all the way. Edward/Jacob…they are BOTH fantastic!

  29. Brittney Said,

Blasphemous or not, TWILIGHT IS BETTER THAN HARRY POTTER! I honestly thought this day would never come–the day where I said something was better than HP, and the day the movie FINALLY came out. I read the first 3 Twilight books in 4 days and then had to wait THREE WEEKS for New Moon to hit stores–and yes, I reserved a copy of it in advance and picked it up at midnight with the 13 year old girls. And I’m not ashamed.

Lincee, I’m convinced that you and I are the same person. Except I like green beans and cats.

  30. Shameless Said,

Oh my stars!! I logged on here specifically wondering whether you were into Twilight, thinking I’d leave a comment asking.

And what do I see but a “Team Edward” post title!!! I love you, Lincee. And there is nothing wrong with being a 30-something woman into Twilight. Edward and Bella may not have done much more than kissing, but that first book was HOT. Oh my.

But I get the slight shame. I don’t actually think the Twilight series is the most well written or literary, but I don’t think it’s supposed to be. She tells a damn good story. Those pages are like crack. I still remember when I first got Twilight, and still had at least 200 or 350 pages left to go. I went out that night with my coworkers, but I kept thinking of that juicy book all lonely in my house. So I thought, screw this! I ran home half-drunk through the snow, grabbed the book and started reading again.

    I finished it that night.

p.s. I’m sorry, but who could be on Team Jacob? He was often such a jerk. In my eyes, when someone is a jerk sometimes and nice the other times, they are still a jerk!!

  31. JessicaV Said,

Long time reader, first time poster – HUGE fan of Lincee!

Lincee, I am so glad you came out of the Twilight closet! It was so crowded in there!

I, too, am a 30-something fan of the Twilight series (team Edward all the way!!!) I have read all of the books at least 3 times but “Twilight” is still my absolute favorite – the part in the sunny meadow where Edward sparkles and they both declare themselves – it gets me every time (sigh)! I am so hoping the movie lives up to the book, although from the trailers, they have changed some things – I just hope the general feel of the book carries thru to the big screen. I wish we could all go see it together, then I wouldn’t have to feel like I should wear a disguise.

  32. JenJ Said,

I’m team Edward! I just found out about the books a few months ago when I started noticing all of the Edward flair on Facebook. I just read all four of the books in the past 2 weeks. My friends and I have been passing them around. We are all in our later 20’s.

  33. Ashley Said,

LINCEE!!! I am so happy you posted about TWILIGHT! I am going to a midnight showing tonight and will proudly be wearing my TEAM EDWARD t-shirt. I hope to see a lot of adults there screaming right along with the 12 to 15 year olds.

Thank you so much for all you do! My sister, mom and I are all faithful readers!

oh…and ps…I definitely DVR all episodes of Gossip Girl, the new 90210 and even One Tree Hill.

  34. Lindsay Said,

TEAM JACOB!!! Really, am I the only one?
This is defnitely the best series since Harry Potter! I’m 25 and unashamed, these books are like crack to nerds like me! I also DVR Gossip Girl, though I did finally manage to delete 90210 and One Tree HIll from my season pass.

  35. MarriedWithEyes Said,

#22 Cat – According to wikipedia the other books are New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. I have been living clueless and Twilight-free. If Lincee loves it then it is endorsement enough for me to check out the series…..Thanks, Lincee!

  36. Girl Canuck Said,

It’s true Lincee, just when you were already my favorite web personality, you go and get all vampire-y on us! Catharine is right – The Historian is a fantastic book – can’t stop reading it – love, mystery, suspense, vampires, great writing…what more can a girl ask?

Question for the group – does anyone know if you have to read all the Twilight books to be ready for the movie or is the movie just the first book? I’m rushing to read far enough so please advise!

  37. Shamless Said,

Rest easy, Girl Canuk. It’s only the first book. They aren’t even sure yet if the others will be made into movies yet (though I suspect they will, based on how many people are planning to see this one).

Just for fun everyone, how would rank the books in the series, from best to worst? Mine would be:

    #1 Twilight (first book)
    #2 Eclipse (third book)
    #3 New Moon (second book)
    #4 Breaking Dawn (last book)

  38. Jill Said,

I also am a shameless 26 yr old “Twihard” (that’s what I’ve heard us been called). I proudly donned my TEAM EDWARD shirt last night with my 30-something friend as we stood in line with the tweens and their moms for an hour and a half to watch the first showing of the movie!! I am here to report that the movie was beautiful (I of course mean Rob)…awesome scenery etc., but a little bit of a disappointment. The story kind of jumped, and if you haven’t read the book you might not pick up on everything. But I will most certainly be seeing it again and will most certainly own the DVD.

BTW, you must must must read Midnight Sun…it is Twilight written from Edward’s perspective and makes the whole saga a billion times bettter. You can find it Stephenie Meyer’s website. But all you other Twihards probably already know about it ;) !

  39. Shannon Said,

Rest assured, there are plenty of us out there obsessed with Twilight! My friend turned me on to them and I was actually sad, SAD, when I finished reading Eclipse and had to wait for Breaking Dawn to come out. Now trying to explain this obsession to people that haven’t read the books is rather tricky. They tend to stare at you like there is an ogre growning out of your forehead.

  40. Shannon Said,

Oh by the way, they ARE going to make movies out of the rest of the books. The first two have already had the rights purchased and the characters have signed on. WOO HOO!

  41. Sarah Said,

    SOOO Excited about the movie!!

  42. Brittney Said,

Umm…so my heart was broken last night, as that movie was TERRIBLE. Am I alone here?

  43. CCP Said,

Check this out: Stephenie Meyer started writing Twilight from Edward’s perspective, and the draft was
leaked, so she has posted what she’s got so far on her website. Its longer than I thought it would be, but very interesting to read his thoughts. And it starts from the beginning too so I don’t think there are any spoilers… Enjoy!

    http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/midnightsun.html

  44. Denise Said,

The books were fabulous — highly entertaining. The movie — not so much. They needed a bigger budget to make the action scenes better. But RPatz did not disappoint as the perfect Edward. And yes I am all about Team Edward. I will definitely see any sequels.

  45. Sue Said,

I haven’t read the books and don’t plan to see the movie, but I’d have to vote for Jacob, because the actor who plays him is from my neck of the woods.
So sorry, just not a vampire fan…

  46. Colorado Cat Said,

Oh lincee I am so psyched that you read them and loved them too!!!!! I got on the bandwagon this summer and i think i read them all in about a month (it would have been faster but unfornately i had to go to work everyday). I haven’t seen Twilight yet but am thinking about dragging my husband to see it this weekend. I also found out about the leaked manuscript and am about halfway through that…but its hard b/c you can’t print it out so you have to read it on the computer. i am such a geek b/c I want stephanie meyer to just keep writing about edward and bella and for the record TEAM EDWARD!!!!!!!!!

  47. Colorado Cat Said,

They made the movie for $30 something million. Its from a first time woman director and a new movie studio so that may be why it wasn’t as great as anticipated (I haven’t seen it yet though). Everyone who reads this should also go check out the Host, its also from Stephanie Meyer and although the first chapter was kind of weird i really got into it and it was really good. I hear she’s also writing a ghost story too…that girl can write!
PS – my 63 old mother is also addicted to these books!

  48. Erica Said,

I’m 31 (there I said it), I saw Twilight twice this weekend (there, I said that too). I also forced my husband to see it (I made him read the books first (yes, all 4)). He enjoyed both the books and the movie, as did I. At first, after seeing the previews, I was disappointed in thier choice for Edward. He was not at all what I fantasized, oh I mean pictured, in my mind. However, after seeing the movie, he met all the expectations. I hope they make the other 3.

  49. Jenna Said,

Holy crap! I am so excited. I’m 30, and I read an enormous amount. I read everything, but mostly literary fiction. Toni Morrison, Ernest Hemingway, Amy Tan, blah, blah, blah. This summer I couldn’t escape the Twilight phenomenon. What was the deal, and why hadn’t I heard about this before? Was it because I don’t read today’s YA stuff? Well, I had to find out; CONVINCED that I was going to hate it…nay, loathe it. And I fell in love with Stephenie Meyer and her books. Head over heels. I couldn’t get enough (except for the last book, I have to admit), and I cannot wait until we can get a babysitter so I can go see the movie. My husband is also perplexed as to why I love the books so much — after all, it’s not very good writing. It’s just one hell of a compelling story. I keep showing him the parts of the trailer where the vampires are fighting. “See honey? Fighting vampires! You love fighting vampires, and fighting werewolves!” (He’s an “Underworld” fan). We’ll see.
Hooray, Lincee! I’m team Stephenie Meyer!

  50. Rebecca Said,

please please please make the other three movies TEAM EDWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

seriously, robert pattinson made my teeth sweat in HP4, and woah, even more in twilight. LOVED IT.

  51. Char Char Said,

Well, I have a 10 year old and she started reading Twilight. And I told a friend. And she told a co-worker. And the co-worker said Eclipse and Breaking Dawn were possibly too graphic and maybe I should check them out before letting her read them. So, I thought….great, now I have to read the books to “preview” and make sure they are acceptable. I read Twilight in 2 days…..EXCELLENT! New Moon took longer….for one, my daughter was in the middle of reading it, but I explained I had to pass her, so she should stop. (Real reason….I couldn’t wait to read it….I was hooked after Twilight). And this book was super depressing! So, I get through that one in about a week. Eclipse, it took about 4 days, and Breaking Dawn took about 2 days. I finished yesterday….I didn’t think they were too mature for her. I like how she doesn’t say, and I don’t think my child will read between the lines. So she has been given permission to finish the books.
Saturday afternoon in between dragging her around running errands, we stopped at Edwards to her surprise and saw the movie! EXCELLENT!!!! And it’s crazy how much chemistry Edward and Bella have on screen. Like………this is truly a love story and you feel like they really and truly are in love. Two thumbs up!!

  52. Camels & Chocolate Said,

Ugh, see I did NOT care for the books much at all. But I’m still stoked to see the movie. I think my indifference toward them is due to the fact that I read the entire Southern Vampire Series (on which True Blood is based) before Twilight, and those were SOOOOO much better. Pick them up if you liked Twilight so much!

  53. Char Char Said,

    # 38 – Thanks Jill………….though I must say, these books are interfering w/my book club book!!! But I will get Midnight Sun!!

  54. hollyann Said,

I have said it before and I will keep saying it – CHEAP Buffy RIPOFF! Not even as clever or unique.

  55. Lizzie Said,

#34 Lindsay – You’re not the only one! Team Jacob !!!

  56. beek Said,

OK, may i just start by saying that i love me some IHGB!! Lincee you just crack me up! We are seriously braintwins. So, here’s my 2 cents…I teach high school AND i am in the 30 something club. Just this past Thanksgiving weekend I took a hideously long roadtrip and bought Twilight to read in the car. I just wanted to see what all my students were flipping out about. May I just say that I read the entire book during the road trip and had to use my gps to locate the nearest Barnes and Noble so I could buy books 2 and 3? I freakin LOVED them. I also dragged my happy butt to the movies just to see Twilight. It wasn’t nearly as good as the book, (they had to cut too much detail and i totally understand that) but it was entertaining and I loved it anyway. I cannot wait to read book 4 this weekend! I love Edward, i LOVE Robert Pattinson and I am obsessed with these books…is that wrong? Thanks for being the first to fess up…I’m right there with ya sister!!

  57. beb Said,

I blame everything on being an junior high English teacher. I have been reading books like this for years and I just blame it on my students. I have to read what they tell me about. It works perfectly! I read Twilight when it came out and I can not wait for the next movie!

  58. newfan Said,

Thank you Lincee! You don’t steer us wrong! I’m 30 and picked up Twilight after reading your post. I was reluctant b/c I am creeped out by vampires and sci-fi, but these books ARE like crack. I read Twilight in one day and the finished the other 3 books over the rest of the week. I’ve seen the movie twice by myself and I have been googling Rob Pattinson like a stalker. I’ve also gotten my other 30-something friends on the bandwagon and can’t wait for the rest of the movies!

  59. beek Said,

ditto newfan, ditto. i did the same thing! i secretly google Rob Pattinson when my hubby’s not in the room. Am i 12????

  60. bella95 Said,

    EDWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  61. atl Said,

Just started reading these a few weeks ago. I am on book three and completely obsessed. I think I am definitely Team Edward but, love the fun carefree side of Jacob. Already a little sad to know I will be finished with them soon!

  62. SC Said,

I rolled my eyes everytime I heard about this series or the movie for months. Then I found myself in the airport book store with no time, and there sat a discounted copy of Twilight. I finished it on the flight and bought the 2nd book at the airport that I landed at. I am absolutely Team Edward. Jacob is great, but no one will ever love Bella the way Edward does!
