My friend Kyle Cordell and I are kindred spirits when it comes to the infatuation of a certain reality show. In a recent conversation on Facebook, I realized that he has some pretty impressive insight to this obsession we call American Idol. I asked him if he would like to share a few thoughts on “Rat Pack” week.
He shared. And then some. Enjoy!
Personal note: We are adamant supporters of Kris Allen. America…pick up the phone and VOTE. I do not want to see my boy in the bottom three again.

Even though people were nervous about Tuesday night, thinking that the iodlettes would not do well, I figured it was going to be one of my favorites of the year. And I loved it. I love that type of music, and I feel that that with the talent this year, they can do anything.
So I will start with the things that bug the crap out of me.
1. ADAM LAMBERT
I am pretty sure the world is hypnotized by him. I am serious. Jensen (a friend) and I watch the show and analyze it every year together. I can not ever remember agreeing on anything—EVER. For instance, he loved crazy skunk girl last year and I could not stand her. And I like Gina from a few years back, and he wanted her vocal cords to be cut in half. So when I first saw Adam, I knew that I could not stand him, which meant Jensen loved him. When he said that Adam bugged him more than a Jonas Brothers concert opening with Miley…I was in heaven.
I figured that Adam would last a few shows and then America would look at him and his patented hyena yell he does for every song and vote him off. I think two things happened that have kept him on:
A.) Simon giving him a standing O (which is only because time was running out)
B.) Paula crying for every song he sings. I think she would willingly give up her first born to just to hear him scream.
I am sorry if you like him, but when he sings, and you know he is about to yell, I actually cringe and close my ears. I then proceed to get mad at America for keeping him in. Yes he can sing. Stop yelling and I think he would do fine.
2. Kara Diannoying
Holy cow please tell me she is not taking Paula’s place. Because if anyone thought Paula was bad, Kara will ruin that show. It is like when you were dating a girl in high school and then the ‘hot’ girl showed interest in you and you went out with her, and over dinner you realized that she could not carry a conversation with her glass of water and you proceeded to pray that Doc Brown would come flying through the room and take you back in time with Huey and you would not break up with the better girl.
This week when she did her little Danny “Rat Pack swagger” thing, I threw up in my mouth and my ears shut down. For me she is like a mix between Juliette and Ben from lost. There are times when she shows redeeming qualities and says things that are ok, and you know she may be there to save the strandees on the island, but you don’t care. Nothing she can do will ever make me like her. She may be good, but when her mouth opens, I feel like my DVR is going to run out at the end and I am going to miss another performance. (How can you let this happen FOX? Oh yeah…limit Paula and Kara to two words each.)
I WILL STOP ON THE ANNOYING, BECAUSE THAT WAS A LOT OF HATE IN THE THERE
1. Danny Gokey
He was one of my favorites going into the show. I love his raspy voice and his energy. I feel though that his performances are the same. They start out and you are like, “This is good, but can you just get to the part when you take the mic off the stand and start really using your raspy voice?” Because that is what I want to hear. And it never disappoints me.
2. Allison
“Alone” was an amazing performance at the beginning of the season, and I fell like she has had some amazing ones. But none like that.
3. Kris Allen
I am basically biding time until I talk about Kris Allen. He has quickly become my man crush, surpassing Cool Breeze from the Unit, Darius Rucker and Gardale Hatley. (Not Barry Sanders though. He is always number one.) I loved Kris from “Man in the Mirror.” I bought his performance and have loved him ever since. He does not have bad songs. He has ones that maybe aren’t great, but never bad. His “Ain’t No Sunshine” was the best song I have ever seen on American Idol (followed closely by “Hallelujah” last year and Bo Bice’s acapella a few years back.) He is the only one on the show now that is so diverse musically. His arrangements are amazing and sometimes very different than the original, which is what we are looking for. And “Falling Slowly” may be one of my favorite vocals ever. I bought it the day after he sang it. As of today, it has 79 plays on my iTunes, not counting iPod and the CD I burned of it in my car. Obsessed? Yes. But that’s ok.
When I watch the results show, I usually go really fast through them because they are typically bad performances and the judges talking just to hear themselves talk. I was excited about Natalie Cole. She has a good voice but the song was bad. And I love Jamie Foxx, but he proved that if you get a voice changer and have a good body, you too can make it big. I want him behind a piano singing blues and jazzy stuff. Please Jamie— don’t turn into Kanye. The world can only take one if him.
I want Ryan one day at the beginning of the show to say, “OK Kiren. Dim the lights. Adam, you sang some song that you yelled and…oh screw it. You’re going home. Ok now we can have a real show.”
Allison has the girl votes and will kill next week. Danny and Kris have the same pool with Kris getting the young girl votes (count me as a voter.) Adam is going to get all the people who don’t really think on their own and only listen to the judges. Sorry if that was harsh. I just really don’t like him. If he goes home next week, I promise I will take my shirt off, grab my dog and celebrate with the neighbors like Denzel did in Titans right before the big game. Fletch will be on my shoulders and I will yell at the neighbors to come out as I scream, “We did it. We really did it! The beast has been slayed.”
Please grant me this opportunity.
Do you mean you have a man crush on Barry Sanders the ex football player? If so he can be a jerk. He came into our restaurant the other day and was very rude to the staff. One of the managers wanted to shake his hand and he refused.
I am an Oklahoman by birth and am an OSU Cowboy, probably an unhealthy addiction of mine. I have followed Barry all of my life and love what he did on the field and in Detroit. Sorry if he was a jerk. I will tell you he is extremely shy. If you see him again tell him to play football again.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Kris. Tho my final 3 (and I would be happy with any of them winning ) is DEFINITELY Kris, Allison and Danny and I consider myself a “GOkey Girl ” (i made that one up), I fall more and more in love with Kris by the week. And Adam should be loooooooooooooooooooooong gone. And AMEN to “I want Ryan one day at the beginning of the show to say, “OK Kiren. Dim the lights. NO NO NO NO NO…
I love Adam, actually, I love all 4 that are left. I started out as a purely Danny fan and have grown to love all of the final 4. Now that Matt is gone, finally, we can have a real competition. I think Kris is ADORABLE, I think Danny is original and I think Allison is ahead of her time but I LOVE ADAM.
Next week will be a really hard results show no matter who goes home! I will probably disagree with the choice no matter who goes.

Danny is so karaoke. He’s Danny Karagokey. Go home Gokey. Allison is awesome, but she won’t win. Kris is my hero. He has smoother skin than the bum of my month-old niece. And they need to quit giving Adam glow-in-the-dark stage props and fancy lighting. Fair is fair people.
I HEART KRIS! I have never in my life voted on American Idol until Kris came around. I love him so much! I think Danny isn’t all-that & should go home soon. At least Adam is more original. If all were right in the world, the top 2 should be Allison & Kris. Hands down.

I know I will prob get blasted for this but I do like Adam. I’m not stand up out of my chair and cheer for him crazy about him but he is the guy I tune in to watch. And I forward over judges comments usually because the are so ridic. In the beginning, I was kind of “eh” on Kris. Now, he’s my top 2. I really enjoy him. Crush, no. But he’s great to listen to. Okay, maybe I ♥ him a little.
I am an Adam and Kris fan. Love them both. I love Adam’s “this is who I am, take it or leave it” attitude….love, love, love him for that. And he has a beautiful voice. He can sing anything from classical to heavy rock. Have you You-tubed him? He is phenominal. But Kris has a sexy voice. I will buy his first album for sure…..

Oh Adam. So cute…and a great singer. Im glad he didn’t go home. I would hav protested agianst the show and never watch it EVER agian. I hope he wins. Now Kris is also doing well, but he can rise to a challenge. I am interested to see who will go home next.
Danny was my fav until Hollywood and then I heard that rock-n-roll scream and thought – WHO IS THAT? And then, there he was…that was it for me. I was all, Danny Who? Then little Kris kind of snuck up on me and I kinda like him, kinda if I were 13 and had mad crushes on sweet innocent boys. Allison is amazing and I still get stuck on the fact that she is 16…So, Danny won’t win, Kris is the dark horse for the top 2 spot. Allison will go next – but Adam. He is gifted. His voice is amazing. Google his brigadoon performance. unbelievable. Sorry – Kris won’t win…he won’t leave next week but …not too far after that…:(

Is it me or did the judges start using the word “indulgent” a lot this season? In any case, in my opinion, that’s the perfect word for Adam; he just seems so full of himself.
Danny is my favorite, but Kris is definitely a close second.

I will admit that when I wrote it I thought, “man I am going to piss a lot of people off.” But then right after that I realized I don’t care if I did, it is just a TV show. Adam has talent, but he falls back on his horrible yell and sticks his Giraffe tongue out and that ruins it for me. When Kris takes a song like She works hard for the money and makes it a song that could be released right now with the music that is on the radio NOW, that is talent. He is the most gifted all around musically, maybe not the best voice, but the most gifted. Thanks.

THANK YOU!! We have the exact same American Idol views and it makes my week to know someone else out there doesn’t want to bow down to Adam. I am NOT a fan. He needs to seriously buy some pants that fit (anyone else notice the VPL a few weeks back?), get the stringy hair out of his eyes and begin the gay porn career we all know he’s headed for. As for Kara Boob McGee, I completely agree. Besides her string of “here’s the thing”s and answering her own questions, I don’t understand her role on the show. Looks like the “Sues” are in agreement! #13 Sue, I thought the same thing about “indulgent.” How dare they accuse one performer (I think it was Alison?) of being over-indulgent but never say that about Adam? My goodness, he’s re-defined it! Ugh! The screeching is just way too much. I’m not denying the boy can sing, I’m just over the wailing and over-singing. And really, can you imagine ANYTHING he’s done on the radio now? No way.
I did start off loving Gokey, but I agree he hasn’t stepped up to the plate. Great singer, I’d love to have him at my wedding.
I heart Kris. He’s the total package – - talented, cute, completely marketable. Winner or not, he’ll be successful.

I love Kris. But for the life of me I can not figure out why the silly smartass little red head is still on the show. She is awful. – I know she can sing but it sounds like she smoked a pack of cigs every day since birth… and her attitude is horrible. So typical of a teenager.. She has to go – GO GO GO!! I would love to see a Danny v. Kyle finale!!
Agree that Kris is great. He’s my #2…but I gotta say. There is something about Adam that I can’t put my finger on – but I’m OBSESSED. I am a very normal, nice 30-yr-old ‘girl.’ I never get this way. He started off bugging the crap out of me in the early rounds, and then he did that ‘Ring of Fire’ thing and I’ve been hooked ever since. I wait all week, every week, for his performances on Tuesday, and then glimpses of him on Wednesday. I google him all the time. And believe it or not, I find him incredibly sexy. And I know he’s gay!! I think there’s actually a small contingent of straight women out there who agree with me. Anyone?
AMEN brother!!! I thought my prayer was answered last week with Adam was in the bottom two. He came so close – only hope is that he will be voted off this week. He’s so very strange – and creepy. Lately, he’s tried to change his image from scary to “straight” laced so as not to isolate the main street audience. But, that screeching in each song is the give away of his paranormal state of being – I think he’s into some really dark stuff – Satanism/witchcraft etc. Or if not, I bet he’s right on the edge of a lot of alternative lifestyles. He radiates self absorption – unhealthiness. But, he’s aware enough of the need for votes that he maintains a humbleness after every performance. I’m behind Danny – good guy and good voice and getting better as a performer. We’ll see.
kyle, we should so be friends (not to step in between you and tara of course…) as i totally agree with your take on the final 4. i like danny but get bored till his raspy voice (which makes him unique) comes out later in the song. adam is talented but belongs on broadway. he also has a false humility. he tries to act like he doesn’t expect the judges to praise him but his eyes tell a different story. seems like he would have learned to act better than that with his apparent theater background. love kris and must admit i enjoyed it just a bit when adam didn’t get “sent back to safety” before kris. i knew he wasn’t going home but it was fun to watch him sweat even for a few minutes. kris’s humility when the judges compliment him seems genuine. then again it could be because kris loves Jesus and well that definitely shows through…
Am I the only one that thinks Adam should be an Elvis impersonator in Las Vegas. Kris is the winner in my book.

Kris reminds me of a little Monchichhi doll and I love him. I was fully on the Gokey train-he had it all: the voice, the heartbreaking back story. But slowly but surely Kris has ninja-ed his way into my heart.

I decided to drop AI from my TV programming this season, but a friend said “you have GOT to watch Adam Lambert, he’s soooooooo sexy. You’d like him.” I saw a performance on YouTube and asked her if she was insane, he is so unattractive. Now there was a time back in the day when I thought ADAM ANT was hot!! Granted that was over 20 years ago. Adam Lambert is a poor remake and even poor performer than Adam Ant. Lambert’s falsetto makes me want to rip out my eardrums. He tries too hard to be “smoldering and sexy”. Honey if you have to force it, then you don’t have it to begin with. America, please stop voting for him. Let him go find his life in a cabaret or on Broadway.

I haven’t been following Idol this year, but I heard enough about it to hear Adam was The One. I tuned in one night out of curiosity before flipping to the Biggest Loser and had the wonderful pleasure of hearing Kris sing “She Works Hard for the Money”. I was thinking, “Why have I not heard of him? He’s amazing!” Then I had to watch Adam to see what the fuss was about, and I can’t even remember what he sang. The judges loved it, and I remember thinking it was just okay. Based on that night, Kris would have my vote.
Since I’m a week behind on these comments, I’m sure no one will read this but just in case: BachLover #26, Really Adam’s “Ring of Fire” sold you on him? I could see “Mad World” but what he did to Johnny Cash that night was horrible and disgraceful. I’ve been watching the show for 4 years now and that was by far the worst performance I’ve seen in the the top 12.
