Rumor (and IMDB.com) has it that Hollywood is in the process of remaking Ice Castles.
Really? Really Hollywood? Do you think that you are ever going to be able to recreate a moment like this?
(Please pay no attention to the 70s attire and hair in the embedded clip.)
And where are you going to find a modern day Robby Benson, huh? Do you think they just grow on trees? A quick IMDB.com search tells me that this yahoo is going to play Robby’s role of Nick Peterson.

I mean, I guess I can see this working. Whatever. OK. He’s hot. But can he portray a lifetime of emotion in just one teary stare at Lexie? We shall see.
And Lord help me if you have Miley Cyrus or the Jonas Brothers cover the beautiful theme song that plays such an important role in the movie. I will NOT stand for that.
Are you guys with me? Or am I alone here?
Please do not put in the comment section that you’ve never seen this movie because you are 20-years-old. I just don’t have the stomach for that today. Go over to my New Moonpages and banter with the other TwiHeads about how cool and hip and totally awesome I am. Thanks.
I’m right there with you. I don’t know why they have to screw good older movies up by remaking them. Leave them in all of their glory!
Oh my heck, I loved that movie! They are totally going to mess it up if they try to remake if, even though that yahoo is hot.
I saw the preview on Julie and Julia. I was a little bummed! Robby Benson is the greatest! lol
As a young ice skater, I LOVED this movie…even though I was probably the only one of my friends to ever watch it. However, watching this clip has inspired my 2 year old daughter to take up ice skating. I am not worried about some schmo playing Nick, I just want to know who could possibly fill the shoes of Colleen Dewhurst. I mean, really, the lady whipped Anne of Green Gables into shape and then helped a blind girl ice skate!
There is no way a remake will ever be as good as the original.
Thank you for posting this clip Lincee! It was a nice treat at the end of my day!
Blasphemy. I’ll refuse to go see it.
All I can say is…Lincee, you make me laugh, you make me laugh!!!!
Lex! The flowers!
My sister and I loved to reenact all Ice Castles scenes on roller skates in the middle of the street. It was 70s greatness, let me tell you. I even had the precursor to the VCR: the photonovel of the film!
Oh, please, don’t let this feeling end…
Sigh. Oh, there is no modern equivalent of Melissa Manchester. And whatever happened to Lynn Holly Johnson?
PS: That Robby Benson wannabe is a chach.
Oh, hurl. Read this interview with the chick who landed the role of Lexie. I think she might be a chach. “It was supposed to be a TV movie…”.

Some thing CANNOT be remade, SHOULD not be remade.
I am soooooooooooooo with you. With that thought and the thought of Footloose redone…I am just falling apart———-and besides which, how am I old enough that there has been so much time since those movies that it would even be APPROPRIATE for any movie to be redone. A shanda (shame in Yiddish) such a shanda
Are there no creative minds left in Hollywood?? Where are the original screenplays? This is a travesty! Robby Benson – be still my aging heart!
I, ermmm….have never seen this movie. But I swear I’m 31!! The song does sound very familiar, though. I guess I should go rent it now…? I’m kind of dumbfounded on how I haven’t seen this movie, and how it completely escaped my attention. Then again, I just saw “Trading Places” with Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd for the first time the other night, too. Apparently a lot movies have escaped my attention…
Hard to watch that clip without getting choked up….oh, the memories
PS – Here’s something worth noting – it’s directed by the same man who directed the original. So, there’s a chance it might be better than the original, but an even better chance that somehow in his misguided attempt to “modernize” it and one-up himself, it could all go spectacularly wrong.
I can’t think (off the top of my head) any director who has re-done his own movies to great success. Correct me if I’m wrong. Even when it’s different movies in the same genre (George Lucas, I’m talking to you!!!).
LOVE the ’70s hair and clothes
I hate to admit I can’t remember the movie, though I know I watched it with my daughter….. will have to go get it for my niece !!
How’s your recovery going Lincee?
I think I would feel better about this movie if it was a Fa-la-la-la Lifetime movie and it wasn’t called “Ice Castles” but rather “Ice Castles the New Generation” and Robbie Benson was back playing Nick but the story was about their kids.
Speaking of “new generations”…the list of new Bachelorettes is out! Please take a look and blog Lincee. There’s a REALLY good one who lists her job as “homemaker”. I’m sorry….but a single woman should just NOT be able to list “homemaker” as her employment. Can we say “BIG divorce settlement”???

I’m calling it right now… Jake thinks all the girls are psychos and he doesn’t want any of them.
Jake is right to think all the chicks are psychos. Well-adjusted people do not go on reality shows. The only question is, does Jake understand the irony of his situation?
I also saw a preview on the DVD of Julie and Julia, and was so confused at first, whether it was the original Ice Castles in a re-release, or a brand new one. Turns out it’s a brand new one. I did get a little teary eyed at the end of the preview, I will admit.
Thanks for flashback…. watching the clip took me back to high school… or maybe it was college — I just know that i saw this movie in the theater… really wish they would leave some of these movies alone, this is a great example — lincee you’re right, nobody wells up like Robby Benson…. another move I wish they’d leave alone is “Footloose”
But guess we can’t have everything… again, thanks for the memory!
DUDE. I just saw the trailer for this, and it should have been a made-for-tv-movie. Cute boy looks like a hottie in the pic LIncee posted but does not look even remotely hot in the movie. Acting looks CHEESEY! Why would they do this to such a classic? Grrrr. Not even worth it.
I LOVE the original! That being said I’m holding out hope that they will do it justice. The female lead is a professional skater so I’m sure the skating scenes will be good.
I found the trailer preview:

Can I tell you that I’m 32 years old and have never seen the movie? Sorry.
What is it with all of the remakes? Footloose-is bad enough…and don’t even get me started on Red Dawn. Who even wants to watch that without Patrick Swayze and C. Thomas Howell, not to mention Jennifer Grey and Lea Thompson? If someone says they are remaking Space Camp I might just lose it. Don’t remake them! They are perfect in all of their original glory!
#25k, you forgot Charlie Sheen in Red Dawn! And no one mentioned the remake of karate kid!!! WTH? WHY????????
#25 and #26 I TOTALLY AGREE!!! I was more than a little incensed when I heard they were re-making “Red Dawn”. Give me a break!!
If Hollywood is just out of ideas, I’m gonna be rich. How unoriginal to just remake (and ruin) all these movies.
I’ve never thought that Robby Benson was attractive. Sorry, I just don’t see it.
well Jenny T to each her own, but I loved loved loved Robbie Benson, and I will not be watching the new ice castles!!!!!! this clip made me cry, this is one of my all time favorite movies!!!!
Googled Robbie Benson!!
Rich or Rehab: Whatever Happened to Robby Benson?
Posted by Jen Chaney
Do you know the theme from “Ice Castles”? Did you pick up a copy of either Teen or Tiger Beat during the mid-to-late 1970s? Then chances are you’re well acquainted with Robby Benson, a handsome young actor whose blue eyes motivated many girls to compose their own odes to Billy Joe during the decade of disco.
“Ode to Billy Joe,” of course, is one of the movies Benson starred in; others included “One on One” and the figure-skating weeper “Ice Castles.” Then his career took a couple of different turns … so what’s up with Robby Benson today?
As some people already may know — and as this Los Angeles Times profile describes in detail — Benson turned his attention to filmmaking after acting roles dried up for him during the 1980s. (Benson has a weak heart valve and needs surgery every decade or so, a fact that made him “uninsurable” on a movie set.) Benson has an impressive number of TV directing credits on his resume, including several episodes of “Ellen” and “Friends.” Like seemingly every former child star on the planet, he’s also done some voice work, including that of the Beast in the Disney classic, “Beauty and the Beast.” On top of all that, he’s been a professor for more than 20 years and is currently teaching a film course at NYU.
But the main reason Benson is back in the news is this: He recently directed “Billy: The Early Years,” a portrait of Billy Graham that will open in a small number of theaters on Friday. Yet, as intriguing as that is, you know what interests me most about Robby Benson? The fact that he wrote “We Are Not Alone,” the song that plays during the key dancing-in-the-library scene in “The Breakfast Club.” The woman who sang that track, Karla DeVito, happens to be Benson’s wife. Come on, that’s kinda cool.
The couple currently lives on a farm in North Carolina and has a teenage son and a grown daughter. (Yeah, I said grown. Benson is 52, people!) I’m sure we all wish him much success with his film career. And, for old time’s sake, let’s hope he continues to “look through the eyes of love.” (Sorry, it all comes back to “Ice Castles.”)
I am 47 years old and forced my 16 year old daughter to watch this movie with me since it’s one of my favorites. I told her that the guy was Beast from ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and that convinced her to watch it. Well she LOVED it!! Yippee!!!
WHAT?? A re-make of Ice Castles? You just don’t need to mess with a classic like that!
