Let’s go to the movies

Perhaps, “Let’s Netflix some movies” is a better song to sing since I can’t drive for another 10 days.

It’s killing me people.  Not being able to drive is about as annoying as not being able to take a bath.  Lord knows I know what THAT feels like too!  Fingers crossed that tomorrow my doctor will let me get the stitches wet and I can live a normal bubble bath – filled life again.  PLEASE DR. MOSELY!  IF YOU ARE READING THIS…HELP A PATIENT OUT AND LET HER SET FIRE TO THE BOX OF TRASH BAGS AND HOT PINK DUCT TAPE THAT CURRENTLY RESIDES ON HER TOILET TANK TOP.  MY LEG NEEDS WATER.  LOVE YA LIKE A GOOD DOCTOR, BUT YOUR INITIALS ON MY KNEE CAP HAVE GOT TO GO SOON!

I’m a bit touchy with the knee today.  Can you tell?

But I’m off topic.

As I sat at my desk earlier, I decided it would be a good time to write about my favorite movies of 2009.  So I did what any normal human would do and Googled a list of movies that debuted this year.

Dear reader, I am an avid movie goer.  Working sort of “in” the business at my previous job, I had passes and tickets to anything and everything and some films I never thought about seeing on the big screen.  But something happened in 2009.

I barely saw any movies.

Of course, I saw the ones that deemed worthy of a big, huge, gigantic, red circle on my calendar:

1.  New Moon:  I might have mentioned my love for a certain werewolf once or twice here, here, here and here.

taylor-lautner-shirtless

2.  Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince introduced me to my new crush

3.  The world wide interweb joined me with my infatuation of Captain James T. Kirk.  (hubba hubba)

I also saw He’s Just Not That In To You and 17 Again and The Proposal.  They were good.

Of course, you can’t win them all.  There were plenty of “meh” moments in the theater with Ugly Truth, and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.  I flat out hid under the theater cushion during The Hangover as American Idol Guest Blogger Kyle literally…I mean LITERALLY…rolled in hysterics for most of the movie.

Boys.

And then there was Fame.  Oh Fame.  I had such high hopes for you.  And your soundtrack.  Definitely the biggest disappointment of 2009.

My point?  I’m getting there.

As I sifted through the movies of 2009 to remember the ones I’ve seen, the BIGGER question that came to mind was:

How in the world did I miss seeing some of these movies?  And how have I still not seen some of the ones that were on my radar MONTHS ago?

Get ready.  I’m going to break it down for you.  In no particular order, these include:

Movie:  The Blind Side

To my defense, a Christmas program dominated most of my December.  And immediately following the Christmas play, I had knee surgery that hindered me from thinking straight.  Ironically, I have to walk in a straight leg brace.  But I will see it because I hear it is amazing.

Movie:  Julie and Julia

I love Meryl Streep.  And I adore Amy Adams.  And I thought Julia Childs was a hoot!  Why did I never see this movie?  All of the facts are there in black and white.  It’s a mystery.

Movie:  Michael Jackson’s This Is It

Hello!  I’m a huge MJ fan.  Even worse, I heard it was amazing!  Even worse than that, about 15 people told me I should see it and another 15 were mortified that I had not seen it.  What was I doing that month?  Where was my head?

Movie:  Up

Okay.  I sort of have a defense for this one.  Someone, or several ones, told me it was sad.  And I can’t stand leaving a movie theater sad or feeling yucky as a result of what I just spent money to entertain my brain.  I’m going to need your wisdom Beaners.

Movie:  Night at the Museum 2

See above for my love of Amy Adams.  And I thoroughly enjoyed the first one.  And I remember being excited about the second one.  I’m almost positive I had no idea it came out.  Sort of like how I missed when GI Joe came out.  Did it come out?  I’m off topic again…

Movie:  Whip It

I lived in roller skates from the ages of seven to 12.  This is not an exaggeration.  One of my Mom’s favorite pictures of me is roller skating around the pool (safe, huh?) with my “I’m a Pepper” t-shirt and knee socks.  Some kids got chocolate bunnies and boiled eggs for Easter?  My sister and I scored new roller skates ever year.  Why I would miss a movie about roller derby is beyond me.  I’m in total shock.

Movie:  500 Days of Summer

I heard it was good.  I heard it was great!  I never saw it.  Why?  I don’t know.

Movie:  X-Men Origins

C’MON ON LINCEE!

xmen_wolverine_gambit_taylorkitsch

ryan_reynolds_deadpool_x_men_origins_wolverine

I’m quite confident that I had to be on CRACK to not know two of my favorite crushes were in this movie.  Seriously.

And now that the holiday movie season has hit, there are other shows that have crept up on the radar:

Movie:  Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law?  Please and thank you.

Movie:  It’s Complicated

I heard it wasn’t complicated at all.  I heard it was fabulous.

Movie:  Nine

I love a good movie musical.  But it debuted at number eight.  That can’t be a good sign.  Anyone?

Movie:  Avatar

I’m including this one because I don’t want a million emails telling me to go see this show.  I have no interest.  I’m sorry, but I don’t.  The blue people remind me of Jar Jar Binks and he drove me bananas.  Why couldn’t the main dude (clearly an actor in the running for 2010 movie crush) look like himself?

Sam Worthington attends The Edmont Society Affair: A Benefit for Readers & Writers at The Friars Club on October 27, 2008 in New York City.

Now there’s a movie I’d see in a heart beat.

I need your help.  Steer me in the right direction dear readers.  Help me to decide what is a “must go see now” or “must Netflix now” or “don’t waste your time” because I’m overwhelmed at my choices.

And are there any I left out that you feel were worth mentioning?

You did a great job on the Christmas movie conundrum.  Let’s hear your voices on this one!  HAVE AT IT!

Okay, I saw Avatar and it was good. The forest was amazing and yes, I even wound up liking the blue people! I did not expect to.

    It is worth seeing.

  2. SGT Cole says:

“Blue people?” that sounds vaguely racist like “you people.” Hey “My Awesomeness”, this is a blog for light-hearted chit chat about reality shows, not a forum for hate!

  3. Melissa says:

“The Blind Side”….Please go see it! I saw it twice, may see it again 2mara or Avatar! Not sure yet!
“It’s Complicated”…John Krasinski is so CUTE & funny in this movie!!!! I’d see it again just to see him!

  4. Melissa says:

Oh yeah, 1 of the 3 movies I got from Netflix this week was, “Away We Go” starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph. I enjoyed it! It has a JUNO’esque feel to it…with a lot of humor and heart! Maggie Gyllenhaal’s character is hilarious…one word, “stroller”!

  5. AussieNatalie says:

One film I was dragged along to but really enjoyed (and didn’t think I would) was Zombieland. A bit gruesome in parts (in a schlocky zombie kinda way) but Woody Harrelson was ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!! I laughed out loud a number of times….Sam Worthington is gorgeous..of course he’s Australian lol if you get the chance to get an Australian series called “Love My Way” on DVD it’s absolutely wonderful and he’s in 10 of the episodes of the later series.

  6. Lori says:

I only saw Julie & Julia and Whip It – loved them both! I’ve been wanting to buy Up, but haven’t done it yet – I love the commercials with the dog (reminds me of my ADD dog!)

I’m on the “not so fond of” Avatar train too – but I definitely want to see The Blind Side and It’s Complicated – they are on my list!

  7. Brett says:

Up is such a great movie — definitely sad but uplifting and sweet. I loved 500 Days of Summer and would highly recommend it.

Nine is absolutely terrible. My mom and I saw it last week and almost walked out. We just kept hoping that it would get better, but alas, we waited in vain. If you’re expecting something as good as Chicago, just save your $10.

  8. beens says:

I just saw nine this weekend and I loved it, probably because I grew up singing and dancing. the singing and dancing sections were my favorite parts. I went w/ a non-singing/dancing friend and he loved it as well, he usually critiques all movies and looks at things like the directing, cinematography, lighting, acting, etc.

  9. Jessica says:

I know some posters have said don’t go to Night at the Museum 2, but my husband and I really enjoyed it. There are some funny parts if you know your history. We just watched Up last night, and although the first 10 mins are sad, setting the story for the rest of the movie, the little chubby boy scout and the dogs make the movie! Enjoy!

  10. Ashley Ann says:

I totally fell asleep in Julie & Julia…. it was boring. Night at the Museum was cute and worth Netflixing (it’s a verb now!). The Blind Side was INCREDIBLE! You will absolutely adore it and cry and laugh and want to go adopt a 15 year old 250 pound football player.

  11. Tracey says:

AVATAR – I had zero desire to see it, thought it was way too sci fi for me, but it was AMAZING!!! Totally blew me away. And I agree with the other posters if you have the opportunity to see it in 3D you really should. My 9, 19 and 20 year old all enjoyed it.

  12. Shelley says:

I’m just glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t want to see Avatar.

  13. Jill says:

I am still a major fan of 500 days of summer–it is my favorite movie of the past few years. it is smart and funny and sad and has a great dance number right in the middle of it. you will love it i promise!

  14. Kim says:

OK, you HAVE to see Blind Side…if you don’t do anything more this winter that is a MUST SEE movie. My two young kids went with me to see it and they LOVED it. I thought it had a good family feel to it and it made you think that one person can change the life of another.

  15. SC says:

I kinda have a crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt (wasn’t he in 500 days of summer?). Anyone else? He’s a cutie And funny.

About Avatar… I’m soooooooo “meh” about it.

  16. Firestone_4_eva says:

I think that if you are going to see Avatar, you have GOT to see it in the theater. It just will not be the same on a regular tv. I also was annoyed by Jar Jar Binks but Avatar is beautiful and visually stunning. And you get to see Sam Worthington looking normal quite a bit…its delicious. I also think Nine is another you should see in the theater because the dance numbers are better on the big screen. Everything else can wait for Netflix.

  17. Kathleen says:

Absolutely see “Up.” I don’t know if I would call it sad, but poignant. And hilarious. Dug the Dog is the best canine character in the history of movies. I just don’t think you can go wrong with Pixar.

  18. Colorado Cat says:

Julia and Julia was OK cute but not great. I totally understand all the posters who don’t really care to see Avatar – I was right there with ya but my bro bought our tickets in 3D for xmas day and rather than be a hater I decided to go to see it with the fam and it was great – really great. My husband and I are talking about going to see it again in 3D. I even drank a big cherry coke during the previews and had to pee soooo bad throughout the movie but I literally did not get up out of my seat because I didn’t want to miss anything – it was that good.

  19. Sleep deprived mom says:

    I loved Sherlock Holmes!!!

  20. Shaun Elizabeth says:

Julie and Julia is fantastic! I would start your netflix with that.

The MJ movie was great and very interesting. Its all behind the scenes so you get to see how he works.

I would definitely go see Nine. I’ve seen it twice and think it’s great. Its a very unique movie and the cinematography is great as well as the musical numbers.

Whip it, 500 days of summer and Up are all a must. And I would also recommend Bride Wars, very cute movie.

Also, #65, I totally agree JGL is ADORABLE!
